$5 Doner Sandwich at the Turkish Grill in Sunnyside
Turkish for “rotating meat” this sandwich sure gets around. Spiced lamb served on a huge toasted sesame seed pita, it is filling enough to please the emptiest of stomachs. The meat is fresh, roasted just enough to get the juices flowing and topped with lettuce and tomato. Similar to the make-up of the Bosnian burger, the pljeskavica, the doner kebab sandwich is in a league all its own. Located on Queens Boulevard, the Turkish Grill offers semi upscale dining with a variety of traditional Turkish entrees. Linens cover the tables and the servers keep watchful eyes on their company. Both make the place seem a bit stuffy, but once you start eating you will forget your surroundings completely. The food here is hearty and the prices are more than reasonable. The giant entrees run from about $11-$15 and include chicken, steak, lamb and stuffed cabbage to name just a few. They serve wine but I chose to wash my doner down with some sweet apricot juice.
